AVALANCHES, HELICOPTER CRASHES AND A LITANY OF MEDICAL EMERGENCIES

Birmingham, AL (March 25, 2004):- In just ten days, MedjetAssist has been at the forefront of air medical evacuations for an array of U.S. travelers injured and hospitalized domestically and overseas. MedjetAssist is a membership organization providing emergency air medical evacuation and travel assistance services at no cost for members hospitalized more than 150 miles from home, back to the hospital of their choice in the United States. Standard membership in MedjetAssist starts at $205 for individuals per year, and only $325 for a family. Here is an example of ten days in the life of MedjetAssist:

Two residents of White Bluff, Tennessee, survived a fatal helicopter crash in the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan, during an attempted landing in bad weather 280 miles from the country’s capital, Bishkek. The father and son, aged 65 and 41, were on a hunting trip. Both badly injured in the accident, they were evacuated to a provincial hospital in the town of Naryn at which point MedjetAssist was called to take charge of the continued rescue. Attempts were made to transfer the pair initially to Bishkek, but continuing avalanches blocked the highway. Naryn airport, normally closed in winter, was covered with over 8 inches of snow, so the pair were trapped. MedjetAssist personnel worked nonstop with the U.S. Consulate Office in Bishkek as well as their affiliates in the area to evacuate the members to Bishkek where a long range medical jet and medical staff flew them to Hong Kong for full medical evaluation. They will be repatriated as soon as their condition is clarified. They joined MedjetAssist specifically because of this trip, in February 2004.
